Frequent moves taught me these tips

[00:00:00] After helping many clients, many, make moves and going through several major moves myself, especially coming here to Arizona, I've learned that the hardest part isn't the packing. It's remembering everything else that needs to be done along the way. And thought it'd be nice to take a little stroll and just kind of share a little bit with you because I moved to Arizona and in the f- I've been here 12 years, and I moved seven times.

Let me assure you. And I'd moved a couple times in a couple... I mean, yeah, I did a lot of moving, so I got very efficient at it. But not everybody moves a lot, and not everybody is really very efficient. My brain is just wired that way, so I tend to be very efficient and [00:01:00] very organized. So what I found is that a lot of people think it doesn't take that long to pack.

Eh, definitely will take you a lot longer than you expect to pack because I just think about the kitchen is always the last thing that I pack because it takes the most time. Look at this gorgeous park. Isn't this beautiful? This is where I live, this beautiful park. So I'm just gonna walk around the park for a little bit.

But the kitchen I always save for last because there are so many little pieces. Every plate, every cup, every bowl, and then there's so many things, so you feel like, "Do I need to keep this? Do I need to pack this? Is this something I'm gonna keep?" And what happens, to be honest, [00:02:00] is decision fatigue, and that's why it takes longer, especially because you're packing your belongings.

Everything has a memory, a thought, an emotion attached to it, and that's because... That's why memory fatigue becomes, memory and f- decision fatigue become a real thing because everything you look at, you think about. And you don't mean to, you don't think that's what you're doing, but you can't help yourself.

It's a subconscious thing that you just do, and it's part of why packing takes so much longer than you expect. So that's the first thing I warn people. Pack. Start packing as soon as you know that you're gonna move. Start packing things that you're not gonna use any time in the next, say, three months.

Winter things, seasonal things, sports equipment, hobbies, things that [00:03:00] you know, "Okay, I'm moving," and/or, and this is true for selling as well, but we'll stick to moving. So start packing. You're not gonna be doing focus on your hobbies when you're moving. So, pack those things. Pack seasonal things.

And, and I do find that it's very, very hard and as we get older and, you know, we just, our bodies get tired before our brain wants to be done, you know? And so you may need help. You may need some help going through some things. Again, as we get older we have a lot of emotional attachment to our things.

So every time we're making a decision it's like, do I keep this? Do I keep this? Do I need four sets of sheets? I'm downsizing. I'm only gonna have two bedrooms instead of four. Do I need all of these blankets? Do I need all of this stuff?

And

For some people, it's a lot more emotional to make those decisions [00:04:00] and do that than other people. And so again, start earlier than you think you're gonna need to to pack because if you know yourself and you're more of a sentimental person, kind of emotional and attached to things, it will take you longer to organize and pack.

If you're not organized, if your house isn't organized, 'cause that's just not your style, then it's gonna take you longer because you're gonna be sorting more, making more decisions And then you have outdoor things, and you have pets, and you have children, or you have family members. So to be honest, I'm gonna repeat it again, one of the biggest things that, or the biggest mistakes I would say, that I see is waiting until moving week to handle some of the things that should have been taken care of two, three weeks or a month earlier.

Putting in your change of address. Don't wait till the last minute, because now your mail's gonna be coming to your old address, [00:05:00] and it's gonna be late. It could be bills. It could be important things that you're like, "Where is it?" And it's like, "It's at your old address." You know, contacting, insurance companies, things like that, and letting them know, you know, "We're moving.

Here's our new address." Just waiting, again, too long to start packing, and then you're panicking. And you're packing while the movers are sitting there waiting for you, or your family's waiting for you. Or my worst story I sold my house after I got divorced, and it was just me and another person, a man, moving me basically.

And I had four bedrooms, three bathrooms. It was a big house. I had two kids, two cats, a dog, and I had one person helping me pack. And we waited too long to pack, and we literally, [00:06:00] and I don't advise this, were packing until late, or early I should say, the next morning. And we had to pack things and take it to the storage unit, 'cause I was...

I didn't have a place to go yet. So I was putting everything in storage, including moving multiple cars. So we collapsed. It was hot. It was Minnesota. It was July. It was hot. It was humid. It was miserable. I had no help except one person, and we collapsed on the floor. We didn't even... I didn't remember to have towels and things for us to, like, take a shower, 'cause we were so hot and sweaty.

I didn't have a towel. I had nothing. It was awful. And then we had to finish, like, cleaning the house, because the people that bought my house were coming the next day to move in. I wasn't ready. I was not prepared at all. It was the worst moving experience ever. And I wanted to leave the house spotless. We were [00:07:00] exhausted.

So don't do that. Don't do that. Another thing is that clients don't know, who to use for s- for, um, what do you call it? Moving services. So my experience based on what clients have told me, because I did a company where when I moved to Arizona, which was really cool, I rented a portion of a semi-truck and you load it, you put up this barrier, you put your lock on it, and then they load up multiple stops and then they unload so when they get to your place you're the last load.

I was the first one in so last one out. And we unloaded it ourselves. None of our things got damaged because we loaded it and we unloaded it and there was no, What I hear with storage companies, with moving companies, if you're not going right from [00:08:00] your home to a new location, they unload your stuff and put it in a storage unit and then they reload it and I can't tell you how badly that has gone for most everybody that I've talked to because many things get damaged.

They hold your stuff hostage. So my recommendation if you are not immediately moving into your new home is the pods, those type of things because then you load it, they store it, they don't touch your stuff and then you unload it again and there's always people that you can hire to help you with the loading and unloading.

As far as movers, I've only heard bad, stories. Uh, other than, uh, movers that I did use locally, I can't remember the name of the company but I will find it and I'll put it in a link below. They're the only movers that we've used twice that did an excellent, excellent job

So here's what I can say is [00:09:00] that

What people don't realize is that a well-planned move can still become stressful and is stressful. I'll just say, it is stressful. Moving is stressful, no matter how you dice it. It becomes more stressful when you forget those important things. So that's exactly why we created the 30-day moving checklist, like, 30-day countdown moving checklist.

So it literally starts you 30 days, and the last day is you leaving your house. And so it helps you to not forget those little details that are so easy to forget. I mean, there's so much going on, especially if you're buying a house, you're moving across the country, you're focused on so many things. My goal is to make that easier for you so that there are less things for you to think about.

I've already thought about it for you. I've already put a list together for you. I am doing my best to make that transition for you from where you are [00:10:00] to where you want to be. So if you're interested, click on the link below if you think it would be helpful, and you can then get... download our free 30-day moving checklist.
